Turtles!

I was out of ideas for poems. So, I asked my little brother. He is eight years old and loves turtles. I asked him "What should I write a poem about?" his response: "Turtles!". And there you have it; I have written a poems about turtles.

Turtles!
Hidden there beneath the sand,
A small green creature's sitting.
My favorite animal across the land,
A turtle, soon, I'm getting.

I've begged for one forever,
My wish is coming true!
I don't care whether he's clever,
Or if he's green or blue.

He being shipped through UPS,
In a little box with holes,
My patience is being put to the test,
But as I wait I know:

My turtle, my turtle is coming,
And Pal will be his name,
And so these words I'm humming,
but.. I'm waiting all the same.

I wrote these words with a little tune, but I think they do just fine as a poem. Not my greatest work, but it gave my brother and myself a good laugh.

Studying

I had a math test this morning and was cramming for it last night. And now, after taking the test, I can write my poem.

Study!
You see the notes and work unfold,
The work to help you study math,
"Review your notes!" you have been told,
And so you start the study path.

The many terms are so confusing,
Your head is spinning 'round and 'round,
And pretty soon you will be snoozing,
It's past your bed-time you have found!

What will you do, your out of time!
You sadly put the notes away,
You hope that your grade will be fine,
"Oh please, oh please, oh please!" you pray!

My grade ended up at 100%. Yay!

My Friend's Tenth Birthday.

My friend Maddie turns ten tomorrow, and so I wrote a poem to go in her birthday card, it goes like this:

10th Birthday
Happy happy birthday, this birthday poem's for you,
You're becoming double digit, jump up and shout “Yoo-hoo!”
Your special day is here, you're ten, you're ten, you're ten!
That number sounds so lovely to repeat again, again!

Birthdays are the best, you get to have your pick,
Any flavor for your cake, or several layers thick.
Boxes and bags, presents with tags, and gifts from everyone.
Happy birthday, Maddie, I hope your day's been fun!

I hope she likes it!

Roller Coaster

I decided that if I could choose any kind of amusement park ride to ride, it would be a roller coaster. They create so much excitement! While riding one it's as if your flying. This poem is supposed to capture that moment when you're at the peak of the hill, and you know you're about to experience free fall, but you can't decide if you are nervous or excited.

At the Peak
You climb into the tiny seat
You get strapped in, you tap your feet
The ride jerks forward, lifts off the ground
You feel your heart begin to pound
The clicking noise pricks your nerves
You think about the drops and swerves
You know the moment's coming near
You'd rather be down there than here
Time slows down, and almost stops
You know you're 'bout to reach the drop!

I'm pretty proud of this one, and I have no idea what my next poem will be about.

Softball Sonnet

Softball is an amazing sport that I love to play. Yesterday I played a softball game. I went and pitched four and a half innings. I enjoyed myself and had a boat load of fun! I enjoyed it so much I have written a poem about it. Here is what I ended up with:

Softball Sonnet
The bright green ball released from a hand,
The batter's decision, to swing or to stand,
The loud hard crack when the ball meets the bat,
From the dugout there comes many loud cheers and chants,

A girl's running home, her goal is to slide,
The ump calls her safe, she's met with high-fives,
She walks through the dugout, all gross and sweaty,
There's grass in her hair, there's dirt on her knees

The team takes the field, they're wearing their gloves,
The shortstop yells "BUNT!", the ball bounces off,
A girl fields it and throws it, the ump then shouts "OUT!"
From the bleachers you hear, many hoorays and shouts

I'm writing a poem about a roller coaster, but it's not finished; maybe next time!

Music! My Inspiration

This summer I will have been playing violin for seven years (I started when I was four). I have been using the Suzuki method books. My favorite song is from book two; Gavotte by Lully. I, being a poet, wrote a poem about it:

The Power of Music
Can you sense the powerful feelings
This song so proudly displays?
The colors are dancing everywhere
The sound is whistling away
The music can make you smile
On the rainiest of days
The way this simple magic works
Is a powerful unknown way

The tears begin to evaporate
Their stream no longer flows
This melody of happiness
Is a joy that many know
The simple sheets of music
A violin and a bow
The magic is unimaginable
It makes your spirits glow

I really enjoy playing the violin. I am determined to, every time I discover something I enjoy, write a poem about it.

My other blog is ahomeschoolerslife.blogspot.com/ if you are interested; it is about being a homeschooled child.

Poems I Write

I have always had a love of poetry. It is something that I enjoy to read, hear, and most of all, write. I have written many poems and have decided to make a blog about them. My favorite poets are Edgar Allan Poe and Emily Dickinson. My favorite poem is "The Raven" by Edgar Allan Poe. I love to write short stories as well as poems. I am an eleven year old girl.

This is my favorite of the poems I have written:

The Presence
The whistle and howl of the stormy wind at night
The swaying of the trees, groaning softly, as if to fight
The chilly blow of wind that burns out all the lights
You can feel it being there, just a presence out of sight

When you check it isn't there, yet it's presence is undying
It is nowhere, and yet everywhere, on your caution you're relying
You hear a noise creep toward you, a deep and heavy sighing
You're sure it is a nightmare, 'though that’s truth is underlying

It was an attempt to copy the spooky writing style that Poe has. It lacks some things, I know, but I was pretty happy with the way it came out. I have been attempting poetry for awhile; I have a long way to go before I'm good at it though. Another one of my poems, a much happier one, is:

The Simple Signs of Joy
Rolling down the hill, getting grass stains on your knees,
Swinging on the playground, jumping off and feeling free,
Swimming in the pool, seeing smiles of pure glee,
The happiness and joy is a perfect sight to see,

Jumping in the leaves, with that satisfying sound,
With your friend you skip and play, whirling all around,
Climbing up the trees, then jumping to the ground,
The simple signs of joy, you can feel it all around

The snow is gently falling, the holidays are near,
Your coat, your hat, your mittens, you put on all that gear,
Playing with pure delight, until you have red ears,
Christmas is a' coming, the joy is there to hear,

The flowers are all blooming, there's color on the trees,
The birds are all around you, along with all the bees,
Picnics on the hillside, eating crackers topped with cheese,
All you have to do is look, and joy is what you'll see

That one has a much more cheerful feel to it. So, for a first post, I hope this gives you a feel for what this blog is about; poetry and me.
